"Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers-strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength."
-Barbara Katz Rothman

Postpartum Doula Services

Since ancient times and in cultures all over the world, the postpartum period has been honored as a unique time of transformation, recuperation and connection. Mother is cared for by the women in her life so she may spend all the time necessary caring for her new baby. Special healing foods are prepared with love to nourish her body and regain strength after the most admirable task of giving birth. She has many experienced hands to help her when she has a question about how to nurse or how to hold her newborn. After a period of time this new mother will emerge from her cocoon of love and support with her baby in her arms ready to continue on her path transformed and ready to bring her support to another new mother.

This sounds quite lovely right? And a whole universe away from what has become normal in our society today- you have a baby, 24-48 hours later they push you in a wheelchair to your car and wave you goodbye as you head home. Usually, you’d see your pediatrician the next day or 2 and you won’t be seen by a doctor for about 6 weeks. If you’re lucky you might have family and friends nearby who offer to drop off dinner or hold your baby while you rest but sometimes that help comes with well-intentioned opinions about what you should or shouldn’t be doing. We may believe we can just bounce back into our old lives except with a baby in tow and everything will be the same. Except we’re not, we are not the same.
